What is the Abortion Pill?
Often referred to as a “medical abortion” or “chemical abortion,” the abortion pill is actually a regimen of two different drugs taken in sequence:
Mifepristone
This drug blocks progesterone, the natural hormone your body needs to sustain a pregnancy.
Misoprostol
Taken 24-48 hours later, this drug causes the uterus to cramp and expel the pregnancy.
While this method is common, it is a serious medical procedure that comes with specific risks and side effects. It is not an option for everyone.
Before You Decide
Three Things You Must Know Before Taking the Pill
Taking the abortion pill without a physical medical exam can be dangerous to your health. Online providers often skip these checks, but at Abiding Care, we perform them for free.
1 How far along are you? (Gestational Age)
The FDA has approved the abortion pill for use only up to 10 weeks of pregnancy. If you are further along, the pills may not work completely, which can lead to infection or the need for emergency surgery.
The Risk: Calculating weeks based on your last period is often inaccurate.
The Solution: An ultrasound is the only way to medically confirm exactly how far along you are.
2 Is the pregnancy in your uterus? (Ectopic Pregnancy)
In some cases, a pregnancy implants outside the uterus, usually in the fallopian tube. This is called an ectopic pregnancy. It is a life-threatening medical condition. The Mayo Clinic warns that an untreated ectopic pregnancy can be a life-threatening medical emergency.
The Risk: The abortion pill will not end an ectopic pregnancy, but the cramping it causes can mask the symptoms of a rupture until it is too late.
The Solution: You must have an ultrasound to verify that your pregnancy is in the uterus. If not, we would need to consider the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy and will refer you on for the needed care.
3 Is the pregnancy viable?
Did you know that up to 1 in 4 early pregnancies end naturally in miscarriage?
The Risk: You could take potent medication, and experience the pain, bleeding, and cost associated with it, when you aren’t actually carrying a viable pregnancy.
The Solution: We check for a fetal heartbeat to determine if the pregnancy is progressing.
Medical Safety
Who Should Not Take the Abortion Pill?
As referenced by the Mayo Clinic, the abortion pill is not safe for women with certain medical conditions. You should not take this medication if:
- You have an IUD (Intrauterine Device) currently in place.
- You take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder.
- You have chronic adrenal failure.
- You are Rh Negative (You may need a RhoGAM shot to protect future fertility).
