A positive pregnancy test is an indicator of pregnancy, but it doesn’t tell you the whole story. An ultrasound is a vital medical step to confirm the status of your pregnancy. At Abiding Care, we provide limited obstetrical ultrasounds at no cost to you.
Even if you are considering abortion, an ultrasound is necessary to protect your health. It provides three critical pieces of information:
Research suggests that up to 1 in 4 pregnancies end naturally in miscarriage. An ultrasound detects the fetal heartbeat to determine if the pregnancy is viable (progressing). If there is no heartbeat, you may not need an abortion procedure.
Knowing exactly how far along you are is crucial. It determines your due date, but it also determines which abortion procedures (medical vs. surgical) are available to you legally and medically.
If you are far enough along and we don’t see a pregnancy in the uterus, we need to discuss the possibility of an Ectopic Pregnancy, a condition where the pregnancy implants outside the uterus (usually in the fallopian tube). This is a potentially life-threatening medical emergency that requires immediate hospital care. While we cannot diagnose that, we can refer you on for that care.
